An investment project called “Aigaia Zefxi” was put forth by Greek Ministry of Environment and was taken over by the Spanish multinational Iberdrola and the Greek company Rokas Aioliki North Aegean. The project includes the building of industrial renewable energy resources in the central and northern part of Chios island through the construction of 6 wind farms with 65 windmills in Aipos Mountain and 1 wind farm with 10 windmills in Amani Mountain and the interconnection of the Chios island with continental Greece through underwater cables. However, the locals oppose to the project arguing that there are plenty of negative consequences both for their environment (biodiversity, noise pollution, soil erosion, deforestation, landscape degradation) and culture (loss of traditional knowledge).
