Greece23 May 2017 at 11:08Post count: 0Thessaloniki is the second biggest city in population of Greece. West of the city is the biggest plain of the country. The plain is known for its rice fields. Every spring the fields are flood with water and in the end of summer the harvest is gathered.
But afterwards there is a problem: the remains of the rice plants and their management. The farmers, instead of using ecologically methods for their removal, they prefer to burn the remains because they find it easier, quicker and extremely cheap.
So, every autumn – when air temperature is still high, the rice fields are burned and smog is everywhere. The results: it is difficult to breath-especially people with breathing problems and children are forced to stay inside their houses those days, the visibility is low- deadly car accidents are often and of course the productivity of the fields is decreased year after year….
I wonder, when will we understand that we destroy our environment and our health on our own?
