Sun bear is the smallest of the eight bear species and the only tropical bear inhabiting lowland tropical rain forests throughout much of Southeast Asia; Myanmar is part of the native range of the sun bear and the country is considered to have the largest expanse of potential species range in mainland Southeast Asia. Unfortunately, due to habitat loss and subsistence hunting practiced by the poorest and most marginalized communities, the bears are slowly disappearing being classified as “vulnerable” by IUCN Red List. Initiatives that aim at protecting the bear’s habitat and provide income alternatives to the local communities become essential in order to save the remaining bears populations.
