Chemical manufacturing giant Bayer is set to open a pipeline to transport carbon monoxide from one plant to another.

A pipeline built between Krefeld-Uerdingen and Dormagen  factories in North Rhine Westphalia on the Rhine river should bring down the production costs of plastics manufacturing for the chemical giant Bayer. Although the construction and the opening of the pipeline has been approved, the local government is committed to stopping the pipeline of going into operation.

The public is concerned about their rights for clean air and safety because Carbon Monoxide is odorless, colorless, tastless gas that is lethal even in small amounts.

Although there has been a lot of opposition to opening the pipeline from the local resident in the surrounding areas and many environmentalist, the court has ruled the project unconstitutional.

The company responsible for the construction, Covestro, however ensures the public that the pipeline brings many economic gains for the local community, yet an increasing number of activist state that the pipeline can be used for terrorism attempts.

The local government of Düsseldorf is concerned with the safety of its residents and the potential risks of the project on the environment and therefore has halted the project until further notice.
