On June 15th 2012, 11 landless peasants and 6 policemen were killed in Curuguaty, Paraguay, as peasants were violently evicted from Marina Kue so the Campos Morombí company can sow transgenic soybeans. The day before, criminal court judge had ordered the takeover of Marina Kue as a property claimed by Campos Morombí. However, the company was not entitled to those lands. According to peasants, those lands were allocated by agrarian reform. Since 2004, they have taken legal measures in order to formalize their rights to Marina Kue. With the aim of growing their own food and preserving their rights to land, peasants repeatedly preformed nonviolent occupations which were followed by state-led evictions.
