The explosion of the oil mining platform of Deepwater Horizon on April 20, 2010, for unexplained yet causes, and the ecological disaster that followed in the Gulf of Mexico, was one of the most important environmental accidents of the last decade. This explosion killed 11 employees of the British multinational oil company BP  and leaked into the sea 750 million lits of crude oil covering a sea area of about 176,000 km2. Oil continued for six months to emerge from the seabed at a depth of 1.5 km below the water surface, while the amount of oil flowing through each day was even up to 5 times more than the original.

The oil spill left behind many problems. Stranded carcases of dolphins, dead fish or fish which have bio-accumulated pollutants, and health problems in many people. Contact with oil has affected the whole set of the food chain. Also, the combination of oil and solvent used to clean-up has damaged coral reefs thousands of years old, which can no longer be reconstituted. Besides the large ecosystems, tourism was another victim of the ecological disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, since the tar is covering the beaches from Louisiana to Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.

Speaking of statistics, from January to February 2010 the young dead dolphins were 6 times more than the average, whereas after the incident 650 were beached off the coast. From May 2010 until November 2012 1700 turtles were washed ashore with the annual average being 240.

As far as people are concerned, they are facing serious health problems because of their contact with chemicals associated with the spill: the most common symptoms are headaches, memory loss, fatigue, nausea, dizziness, blurred vision and insomnia.

Big problems have also been presented in the atmosphere, as pollutants released after the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, were similar with those appearing in the air pollution of major cities. According to a study by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration about 8% of oil gushed into the Gulf of Mexico, took the form of airborne organic particles small enough for people to inhale.

The most infuriating thing is that even a destruction of such scale was not been able to 'put mind' to the people responsible for the disaster, as just one year after that the American authorities gave permission to BP (and other companies) to resume submersible offshore drilling as if it never happened anything!

However, a federal judge, ruling on the Clean Water Act suit in September 2014 brought by the U.S. Department of Justice and other parties, found that BP was primarily responsible for the oil spill as a result of its deliberate misconduct and gross negligence. BP argued that the two other participating companies Transocean Ltd. (offshore drilling contractors) and Halliburton (oil field service) were equally responsible. However, the court did not have the same opinion and apportioned fault at 67 percent for BP, 30 percent for Transocean and 3 percent for Halliburton.  That decision means that BP may be subject to $18 billion in penalties in addition to the $28 billion already paid out in claims and cleanup costs. Such penalties are far larger than the $3.5 billion BP had allotted to the case and could have grave implications for the company.

What is certain in all this is that the damage that the Gulf of Mexico ecosystem suffered is immense and its size is revealing gradually as the years pass by showing every time different aspects.
